Checking in here with an introduction seems to be the thing to do, so here I am doing it.
I race a Bimota SB8R and just had a terribly frustrating race weekend due to a tire change which threw my previous suspension settings into the toilet. I found this forum while net-researching suspension topics, and I have to say the content here is fabulous. I don't have any questions to ask at the moment, because after spending the whole day reading various discussions here I now have a bunch of stuff to go measure & investigate & test. I'm sure I'll be back later with questions though, once I know enough to know what to ask.
Racing an oddball bike like the SB8R means that I don't have the luxury of asking for known solutions like the riders of more common bikes do (Hey, anybody know a good initial rear ride height setting for an SB8R? No? Didn't think so. ), so I am very happy to find a resource like this which will help me find the correct solutions for my bike by starting from the basics and working on my understanding of how the variables interact. So I just want to say thanks to all of you who put this together and contribute to it.
Your SB6R, it has Paioli suspension yeh? I used to race a GSXR1100 engine'd GSXR750 (yeh 7/11), I found the heavy crank such a headache to deal with, hard to stop, change directions, the engine braking was too strong, I was always going to get the crank lightened, thinking back, I think I just bought an RC30 instead.
I think the wide spaced 5 speed gearbox didn't help on the down changes; had to set the idle to 3,000 to stop the rear wheel from locking up on down changes (or a real big blip on the throttle), I think a 750 6 speed close ratio gearbox might go straight into the 11, is yours a 5 or 6 speed?
My racebike is an SB8R, not an SB6R, so whole different beastie entirely: TL1000R 1000cc 90deg V-Twin Suzuki lump (6-speed and slipper clutch stock, no long heavy crank to deal with). It has Paoli forks and an Ohlins shock, both of which came on the bike but have since been resprung and revalved.
I race in Washington state with WMRRA at Pacific Raceways (previously Seattle International Raceway) and Spokane Raceway Park (on the other side of the state). Also sometimes with AHRMA -- planning on going down to Miller Motorsports Park in Utah for the AHRMA races in September.
Oops, SB8R, cool, always wanted one of those, now they are real expensive for Gobert replica or Santa Monica, I think the best V twin sport bike out there, just need a stronger crank if getting big horsepower from it.
