Just starting my track riding and understanding of suspension...

Hi everyone,

I'm new to both track and suspension setup and am stoaked to be able to put the two together right from the get-go.

I want to learn as much as possible so I can get the best out of my riding, and better communicate my on track experiences with the guys that know.

I have a CBR600RR 2008 roadbike, but intend on going dedicated track in a year or two. In the mean time I am going to take a moderate but progressive journey towards suspension heaven.

I hope to develop a long term relationship with our local suspension specialist here in Canberra, Laurie Smith. Starting with reworking stock internals front and rear to suit my weight, with a bias towards track rather than street.

I am inclined towards replacing the dual-rate springs in the front, and Laurie might be installing a firmer spring in the rear. Other than that, I believe the rest is just reworking stock internals.

Not sure if I should begin adjusting ride height in the rear right off the bat. I do know that I want to be able to easily run tighter out of the corner and apparently increasing ride height and swing- arm angle is the way to achieve this (from Max's Suspension For Mortals classroom video). I'll be talking to Laurie about this, and whether we can add some kind of shim to increase the ride height a tad without going aftermarket shock.

I am hoping that a small adjustment in the rear will improve trail without affecting rake so much that we are required to compensate in the front.

This bike won't become my trackbike. That will be another 2007/08 CBR600RR that doesn't have so much initial capital expenditure bound up in the stock form. I think I'll be looking to buy a moderately altered trackbike.

Okay, that's it for day one.

Cheers, Nick.
